The deadline, and what happens if you miss it

Feb 1, 2025

Apps can no longer create Script Tags on any store’s Thank you or Order status pages.

Aug 28, 2025

Script Tags turned off for Shopify Plus stores. Additional Scripts became view-only — you can no longer edit them.

Jan 2026

Plus stores that hadn’t upgraded began being auto-upgraded by Shopify (with 30 days’ notice).

Aug 26, 2026

The deadline for non-Plus stores. After this, Shopify auto-upgrades your pages and removes all checkout.liquid and Additional Scripts customizations.

Two traps to avoid

Don’t pause your store to buy time — pausing forces an irreversible auto-upgrade. And don’t disable an old tracking script until its app pixel is tested and confirmed, or you’ll double-count conversions in the gap.

What each old method becomes

Every legacy customization has a supported replacement on the new pages:

Legacy methodWhat it didIts replacement
Additional Scripts (tracking)Meta/Facebook Pixel, Google Ads gtag, TikTok, GA4 and other analytics snippets pasted into the Additional scripts box.App Pixels — the official Facebook & Instagram, Google & YouTube, TikTok apps. If no app fits, a Custom Pixel under Settings → Customer events.
Additional Scripts (content)Upsell widgets, custom thank-you messaging, surveys, order-tracking or review prompts injected via script.App Blocks — added visually in the checkout & accounts editor. No code on the page.
checkout.liquidHard-coded layout, styling and logic on the order status page (Plus).Checkout & accounts editor settings, branding API and app blocks.
Script Tag appsThird-party apps that injected JavaScript into the order status page. The same apps, updated by their developers to use app blocks and web pixel extensions.

The upgrade itself is free. The work is in re-creating your tracking and content correctly — and in the order that keeps your analytics clean.

Why a correctly placed pixel makes or breaks your ads

A pixel is a tiny piece of code that watches what people do on your store. When someone buys something, the pixel tells Facebook or Google: “This sale happened — and it came from your ad.” That one little message is far more important than most store owners realise.

Think of the pixel like a scorekeeper.

If the scorekeeper writes down every goal correctly, the coach learns which players are best and plays them more. If the scorekeeper falls asleep, the coach is only guessing. And if the scorekeeper writes every goal down twice, the coach trusts numbers that are not real. Your ad platform is the coach. The pixel is the scorekeeper.

Here is why it matters so much: the ad platform learns from the pixel. Every time it hears “this click became a sale,” it gets better at finding more people like the ones who already bought. Little by little, your ads get cheaper and sell more — almost on their own.

Now imagine the pixel is missing or placed wrong. The platform stops hearing about your sales. It thinks your ads are failing — even when they are working — so it shows them to the wrong people and wastes your money. And if the pixel fires twice (the old script and the new app pixel both running), every sale is counted two times. The report looks great, but it is fake — and you end up spending more on ads that only look twice as good as they really are.

So a pixel that is placed correctly does three big jobs:

It tells the truth

It shows which ads actually make money — not just which ones get clicks.

It teaches the platform

It helps Facebook and Google go and find more people like your real buyers.

It keeps reports clean

Every dollar is spent on what truly works, not on numbers that are doubled or missing.

That is exactly why, during this upgrade, we test every pixel first, make sure each sale is counted once, and only then switch off the old script. Get this one thing wrong and even a brilliant ad will quietly burn money. Get it right, and the same ad can bring more sales for less.

How we migrate your pages

1. Audit your current pages

We open your personalised Upgrade guide in Settings → Checkout and catalogue every Additional Script, checkout.liquid customization and Script Tag app — what each one does and whether an official app already covers it.

2. Match tracking to app pixels

Each analytics script is mapped to its app pixel (Facebook & Instagram app for the Meta Pixel, Google & YouTube for Google Ads/GA, and so on). Anything without an app equivalent gets a purpose-built Custom Pixel.

3. Install, connect and test — before disabling anything

We install and connect each app pixel and confirm events actually arrive in the third-party platform (Meta Events Manager, Google, etc.). Only once an event is verified do we disable the matching old script.

4. Disable old scripts to kill duplicate events

Running the app pixel and the old Additional Script at the same time double-counts purchases and inflates ROAS. We disable each original script the moment its replacement is confirmed — no gap, no duplicates.

5. Rebuild page content as app blocks

Upsells, custom messaging, order tracking and review prompts are recreated as app blocks in the checkout & accounts editor so they survive the upgrade.

6. Upgrade, verify and monitor

We publish the new pages, place a live test order to confirm tracking and content behave identically, and watch the first days of real orders. The upgrade is reversible for 30 days if anything needs a second look.

Why PRP Webs for the checkout upgrade

Frequently asked questions

What is changing with the Shopify Thank you and Order status pages?

Shopify is retiring the three old ways to customise those pages — Additional Scripts, checkout.liquid, and Script Tag apps. The new Thank you and Order status pages use app blocks for content and app pixels for tracking, so no custom code sits on the page. It is more secure, faster and upgrade-safe.

When is the deadline?

For stores on a non-Plus plan, the deadline to upgrade is August 26, 2026. Shopify Plus stores were cut off earlier (Script Tags stopped on August 28, 2025) and began being auto-upgraded from January 2026. Apps stopped being able to add new Script Tags back on February 1, 2025.

What happens if I do not upgrade before August 26, 2026?

Shopify automatically upgrades your Thank you and Order status pages for you — and in doing so removes every checkout.liquid and Additional Scripts customization you had. If that auto-upgrade happens (or if you pause your store, which triggers it too), it cannot be reverted. Upgrading yourself first keeps you in control.

Will I lose my Facebook Pixel, Google or GA4 tracking?

Not if you migrate properly. Each tracking snippet in Additional Scripts is replaced with an app pixel — the official Facebook & Instagram app for the Meta Pixel, Google & YouTube for Google Ads and GA, and so on. If a piece of tracking has no app, it is rebuilt as a Custom Pixel under Settings → Customer events. Done right, tracking continues without a gap.

What are app blocks and app pixels?

App blocks are drag-and-drop content sections you add in Shopify’s checkout & accounts editor — they replace content you used to inject with scripts. App pixels (also called web pixels) are Shopify’s secure, sandboxed way for apps to collect analytics events, replacing the old practice of pasting tracking code into Additional Scripts.

How do I avoid duplicate conversions during the switch?

Test first, then disable. Install and connect the app pixel, confirm the event is arriving in the third-party platform, and only then disable the matching Additional Script. If both run at once, purchases are counted twice — inflating conversions and ROAS. The order of operations matters more than anything else in this migration.

Why does a correctly placed pixel matter so much for my ads?

Because your ad platform learns from the pixel. Every time the pixel reports a sale, Facebook or Google gets better at finding more people like the ones who already bought — so your ads get cheaper and sell more over time. If the pixel is missing or placed wrong, the platform stops seeing your sales and wastes budget on the wrong people. If it fires twice (an old script and a new app pixel both running), every sale is counted twice, your reports look better than reality, and you overspend. Placing the pixel correctly — and making sure it fires once — keeps your ad spend efficient and your data honest.

Is the upgrade reversible?

Yes — you can revert within 30 days of upgrading, provided your store is eligible (created before January 6, 2025, with pre-existing script customizations). Important exception: pausing your store forces an automatic upgrade that cannot be reverted, so never pause mid-migration.

I am not on Shopify Plus — does this affect me?

Yes. Non-Plus stores have until August 26, 2026 to upgrade. If you have anything in the Additional scripts box — a Facebook Pixel, Google tag, upsell widget or custom message — it needs to be migrated before that date or it will be lost when Shopify auto-upgrades your pages.

Can PRP Webs do this migration for me?

Yes. We audit your Thank you and Order status pages, move every tracking script to the right app pixel or custom pixel, rebuild your page content as app blocks, and verify tracking with a live test order before disabling anything — so you keep your data and lose nothing at the deadline.
